Voluntary disclosure of offences entitles an offender to some degree of leniency even when discovery is imminent, but the degree of leniency is reduced where the offences were likely to have been detected shortly after disclosure and could readily have been proven without the confession. In such circumstances, a significant added element of leniency beyond the utilitarian discount for an early guilty plea is not warranted.
