The upper limit of the sentencing range for dangerous driving offences under s 52A(3) is the statutory maximum set by Parliament (7 years), not the upper limit shown in Judicial Commission statistics. Driving while affected by narcotics over an extended period on a major highway, causing a multi-vehicle collision with serious injuries and putting a large number of people at risk, constitutes gross abandonment of responsibility warranting a sentence significantly above the Whyte guideline of 2 years for grievous bodily harm.
