The appropriate sentencing range for manslaughter involving deliberate violence (such as strangulation) without a weapon, where there is a plea of guilty and significant mitigating factors, is in the range of 8 to 12 years imprisonment. A tentative observation by a single judge that sentencing levels may be too low does not constitute Court of Appeal guidance that sentences should be increased. An SVO declaration is not warranted merely because the level of violence exceeded that in single-punch manslaughter cases or because the body was dumped.
