Evidence of a prior conviction for assaulting the same child complainant is admissible as relationship evidence to show the true nature of the relationship and to negative defences, provided the trial judge gives clear directions confining the jury's use of the evidence. Inconsistencies in a young child's evidence are to be assessed in light of the child's age, special needs, and the time frame over which recall is required.
