Current sentencing practices, while a mandatory consideration, do not foreclose the possibility of sentences above the range established by previous cases for a particular class of offence. In cases of manslaughter of defenceless children involving repeated deliberate violence, sentences towards the upper end of the scale are warranted, and the court signalled that existing sentencing levels for such offences may be inadequate to meet the requirements of just punishment and deterrence.
