The requirements of the criminal law as to the minimum content of jury directions on evidentiary issues (including Longman delay warnings, Palmer motive-to-lie directions, and alibi directions) cannot be transposed satisfactorily and applied to directions in civil cases on like issues. In civil sexual assault cases involving long delay, the trial judge must remind the jury of the prejudicial effect of delay on the defence and on the reliability of witnesses, but is not required to give a Longman-style warning or corroboration direction.
