Where an offender's psychiatric condition (polysubstance dependence with residual psychotic symptoms) is substantially ameliorated by imprisonment and there is no evidence of psychosis at the time of offending, the condition does not render the offender an inappropriate vehicle for general and specific deterrence. For youthful offenders who commit multiple serious violent offences over a period of months using weapons, the factors of youth and rehabilitation must give way to deterrence and denunciation.
