When sentencing on representative counts, the sentencing judge must record the agreed conduct represented by the count, including the approximate frequency of offending over a specified period, so that the 'whole picture' can be seen. Advanced age and ill-health of an offender, particularly where there is a realistic prospect the offender may die in prison, are entitled to more than 'very modest weight' even in cases of serious child sexual offending. The application of sentencing principles concerning age must depend on the facts of the individual case.
