An employer who is informed of the timing of a planned power outage at a worksite must communicate that timing to its workers and take steps to withdraw them from areas without natural light before the outage occurs. On causation, where a worker is injured in circumstances involving two simultaneous events (a mechanical event and a sudden blackout), the court may infer that both materially contributed to the injury, particularly where the worker had performed the same operation without incident on prior occasions. The appropriate yardstick for past economic loss is the worker's earnings immediately prior to the accident, not an average derived from a prior year's tax return, where the pre-accident earnings were not exceptional.
