The 'but for' test of causation is not satisfied where a plaintiff's own evidence establishes that they became aware of a hazard before they would have been alerted by any warning that the defendant was obliged to provide. Photographs should not on their own be used by a judge to assess distances between objects unless there is other admissible evidence to support that assessment.
