JIRS statistics are of particularly limited utility for offences involving a diverse range of criminal conduct such as s 112(1) of the Crimes Act 1900, and the smaller the statistical base matching an offender's specific circumstances, the less useful the statistics become. A starting point of 5 years for a below mid-range break enter and steal offence under s 112(1) was within the range of the sentencing discretion where there were aggravating factors of prior convictions and substantial loss.
