The parity principle requires manifest, glaring or gross disparity between co-offenders' sentences before appellate intervention is warranted; mere arguable discrepancy is insufficient. Where an offender contemplated that violence might be used by a co-offender during a robbery and continued to participate, the actual use of violence (whether with or without a weapon) aggravates the objective seriousness of the offence for sentencing purposes. Drug addiction and mental health problems carry diminished mitigatory weight where the offender has previously been given the benefit of non-custodial sentences with counselling conditions and has re-offended.
