A police officer who has acquired knowledge of Pig Latin through approximately 4½ years of monitoring intercepted telephone conversations in the robbery squad may give opinion evidence under s 79 of the Evidence Act 1995 as to the meaning of coded words, provided the reasoning process is exposed. Evidence revealing an accused's bail conditions is admissible where probative of the identity of a speaker in intercepted conversations, with any prejudice capable of being cured by direction. Judicial Commission sentencing statistics do not define the top of the sentencing range, which is set by the statutory maximum.
