An 11-year sentence for grievous bodily harm with intent, where the offender threw methylated spirits on his partner and set her alight causing full thickness burns, was within range where the offender had an extensive criminal history for violence against the same victim and committed the offence during the operational period of a suspended sentence, notwithstanding mitigating features of an early guilty plea, relative youth, drunken intent and limited premeditation. After a trial, a sentence of 12 to 16 years could have been imposed in such circumstances.
