An amended statement of claim remains an originating process subject to the same six-month validity period for service under UCPR r 6.2(4)(a), running from the date the originating process was first filed. The time limit for service cannot be circumvented by amending the originating process. A court direction to serve an amended pleading does not impliedly extend the validity period unless the court specifically addressed and granted such an extension. The test for extending the validity period is 'good reason', and the existence of a strong case alone, without more, is insufficient.
