A party seeking to vary an entered costs order under UCPR 36.16(3) faces the binding authority of Palmer that costs orders determine 'claims for relief' and thus fall outside the rule's power. Even if such power exists, the finality principle requires quite exceptional circumstances, and a party's failure to raise costs issues during the hearing or within 14 days of entry will weigh heavily against the exercise of any discretion. In defamation proceedings, the liability issue may be treated as severable from the damages issue for costs purposes, and an award of $5,000 is not contemptuous damages.
