Objectively serious money laundering offences under s 400.4(2) Criminal Code Act 1995 (Cth) and structuring offences under s 31(1) Financial Transaction Reports Act 1988 (Cth) involving elaborate schemes, phantom companies, exploitation of workers, and denial of taxation revenue require significant sentences of full-time imprisonment; periodic detention is manifestly inadequate for such offences. General deterrence is a most important sentencing factor for both categories of offence given their difficulty of detection. The subjective circumstances of offenders, including prior good character, do not outweigh the need for sentences reflecting objective seriousness and general deterrence in cases of this nature.
