Feelings of personal isolation and discomfort arising from the normal effects of imprisonment — including that an offender has nothing in common with fellow inmates — have no part to play in sentencing once full-time custody is determined to be the only appropriate sentence. Where multiple assault offences arise from a single act of driving a motor vehicle at a group of people, the sentence structure must ensure that the criminality of each assault offence is separately reflected in the overall sentence, and the totality principle does not permit the assault sentences to be entirely subsumed within the sentence for the principal offence.
