An overall sentence of 15 years (NPP 9.5 years) for two armed robberies and one assault with intent to rob committed while on parole was manifestly excessive, reduced to an effective 10 years (NPP 7 years 3 months), with individual sentences of 7 years confirmed. A parity argument is not available where the comparison is with a co-offender sentenced for a greater number of offences; such a comparison goes to the available sentencing range rather than parity. Howie J (Tobias JA agreeing) expressed the view that the sentencing range for multiple armed robberies is too low, though this did not form part of the ratio.
