It is erroneous for sentences for individual offences of the same type to be increased simply because they are a second or third offence and then made cumulative, as this results in double counting. When sentencing for multiple offences, the plea discount must apply to the overall sentence, not just individual sentences. An offender's mental illness unconnected to the offending does not diminish culpability but may still be relevant to general deterrence and the harshness of imprisonment.
