A sentence of two years imprisonment was appropriate for a single punch to the face of an 89-year-old woman causing significant and potentially permanent injuries, where the offender had an extensive criminal history including prior violence convictions, was on probation at the time, but suffered from alcoholism, depression and homelessness, and had spent approximately eight months in pre-sentence custody that could not be declared as time served. A sentence of 30 months for such an offence was manifestly excessive.
