Under the pre-2010 definition of 'import' in s 300.2 of the Criminal Code (Cth), the word 'imports' in s 307.2(1)(a) requires proof that the accused brought drugs into Australia, caused them to be brought into Australia, or introduced them into Australia from abroad; it is not sufficient to prove that the accused did acts that were 'part of the import'. The complete removal and non-replacement of drugs from packages by police ends the importation, but post-importation conduct may be used as circumstantial evidence that the accused was the person who caused the drugs to be brought into Australia. The 2010 amendment to the definition of 'import' broadened the offence to include 'dealing with the substance in connection with its importation'.
