A sentence of 6 months' imprisonment for possession of 2.75 grams of methylamphetamine for personal use is manifestly excessive; current sentencing practice suggests 1-2 months or a fine is appropriate. Where a manifestly excessive sentence on one count vitiates the non-parole period, the whole sentence is reopened, but the appellate court may re-sentence without altering the total effective sentence or non-parole period if the remaining sentences are appropriate. A sentence for simple drug possession should not be assessed by reference to the offender's access to drugs arising from a separate trafficking conviction.
