The utilitarian discount for a guilty plea is not fixed and may be eroded where the sentencing hearing is protracted by the offender's unsuccessful factual disputes, particularly where victims are required to give evidence. Where multiple victims suffer grievous bodily harm from a single episode of dangerous driving, minimal accumulation (three-month increments) between sentences will generally be manifestly inadequate. Remorse, even genuine remorse, cannot effectively displace personal deterrence where the offender has a long history of driving offences while unlicensed.
