A trial judge's opinion that jury verdicts are not inconsistent is entitled to little or no weight where the opinion is based on an evaluation of the content of evidence apparent from the transcript, rather than on matters not readily apparent from the written record. The applicant's admissions in a record of interview that are inconsistent with trial evidence and consistent with complainants' accounts may assume particular importance in the jury's assessment.
