The sophistication and planning involved in drug trafficking offending may be considered by a sentencing judge as inconsistent with a finding that mental impairment reduced moral culpability, even where psychological evidence supports a causal link. The recruitment of one's own children, particularly minors within the jurisdiction of the Children's Court, into a drug trafficking enterprise is a factor of very great gravity that may justify a smaller disparity between co-offenders' sentences than might otherwise be expected.
