A finding of reduced moral culpability under the first Verdins principle does not displace or diminish the relevance of just punishment, specific deterrence, or aggravating factors such as premeditation and use of force. The assessment of moral culpability is only one aspect of determining just punishment. Where the offender retained awareness of the nature and wrongfulness of conduct and acted purposefully, specific deterrence remains a relevant sentencing consideration. Premeditation and use of force may properly aggravate the seriousness of offending where delusional thinking is not implicated in the offending.
