Where a co-offender's sentence has been significantly moderated under Verdins principles due to mental illness, the difference in personal circumstances may be sufficient to justify the same sentence being imposed on a less culpable co-offender who cannot rely on Verdins, without giving rise to a justifiable sense of grievance. However, where a co-offender receives a manifestly inadequate sentence, the parity principle may still require some reduction of an otherwise appropriate sentence, though never to a point where the reduced sentence is itself manifestly inadequate.
