A sentence of 7 years' imprisonment with a 4-year non-parole period for intentionally causing serious injury involving a premeditated knife attack on an estranged spouse in breach of an intervention order, committed in the presence of children, is within range even where the offender has no prior convictions, suffers from PTSD and major depressive disorder, and pleads guilty. Arguments based on percentage discounts under s 6AAA are not helpful; if the discount appears inadequate, the more likely error lies in the hypothetical sentence rather than the sentence imposed.
