Where cumulation orders produce a total effective sentence that exceeds the base sentence by a significant margin and is out of step with comparable cases, the appellate court may intervene to reduce cumulation while preserving individual sentences, applying the totality principle as advised in DPP v Grabovac [1998] 1 VR 664.
