In proprietary estoppel by encouragement, the loss of an opportunity to negotiate for the acquisition of an interest before changing position in reliance on the encouraged expectation constitutes sufficient detriment, provided the prospect of a successful negotiation was not fanciful or unrealistic. The prima facie entitlement is to have the encouraged expectation made good, not merely the minimum relief necessary to reverse the detriment.
