A non-parole period of 21.42% of the head sentence may be within the permissible range for an offender with chronic schizophrenia where the evidence demonstrates that the offender can be rehabilitated with appropriate community-based psychiatric treatment and parole supervision. The requirements of s 53A(2)(b) to indicate individual sentences when imposing an aggregate sentence are important but non-compliance does not invalidate the sentence by reason of s 53A(5). Proper compliance with s 53A(2)(b) serves four purposes: application of the totality principle, appellate review, public understanding, and re-sentencing if convictions are quashed.
