Prior convictions do not aggravate the objective seriousness of an offence but may be taken into account in determining where within the range set by objective circumstances a sentence should lie. When sentencing for multiple serious offences against multiple victims where the offender has already been sentenced for other offences, the totality principle may require greater concurrence of sentences than that provided by the sentencing judge, even where individual sentences are within range.
