Where an offender's chronic untreated schizophrenic illness is causally related to the offending, the principles of general deterrence, retribution and denunciation are lesser factors in sentencing, and this must be reflected not only in the head sentence but also in the non-parole period. Community protection and personal deterrence may be adequately achieved by a shorter term of actual incarceration combined with a longer period of parole supervision.
