The totality principle applies to require consideration of periods of cancelled parole and existing sentences when sentencing for offences committed while on parole, and does not require strict contemporaneity between offences. Sentences properly adjusted for totality may appear lenient in isolation. Whether the principle extends to the total period of prior custody (beyond the cancelled parole period) remains an open question in Victoria.
