Remorse must be assessed at the time of sentencing, not by reference to the offender's conduct in the period immediately following the offence. Where multiple offences arise from a single incident lasting only seconds, cumulation of sentences may be manifestly excessive. Direct evidence of remorse from the offender is preferable to reliance on third-party witnesses.
