The sentencing range of five to eight years imprisonment for rape of a child around 10-12 years old (after allowing for an early guilty plea, without violence or breach of trust) does not extend to a partially suspended sentence of five years where the offending involves breach of trust and multiple offences on separate occasions. In such circumstances, a head sentence of seven years with parole eligibility after two years was appropriate. The common practice of ordering parole eligibility after about one-third of the sentence is not a rule or prima facie rule.
