A sentence of 10 years' imprisonment with a 5.5-year non-parole period for two counts of anal rape accompanied by sustained violence, threats to kill, use of a knife, forced ingestion of petrol, and breach of protective court orders was manifestly inadequate. The appropriate sentence was 15 years with a 10-year non-parole period. Where offending breaches bail conditions and a restraining order, those breaches are serious aggravating factors and the sentence should ordinarily be cumulative upon any prior sentence for the earlier offending that gave rise to those orders.
