Not guilty verdicts on some counts do not necessarily render a guilty verdict on another count inconsistent where the acquittals can be explained by a lack of preparedness to find the charges proved beyond reasonable doubt on the complainant's evidence alone, rather than a wholesale rejection of the complainant's credibility. A general direction on prior inconsistent statements is sufficient where defence counsel has made strong submissions on the specific inconsistency; no specific judicial direction on individual inconsistencies is required.
