The Zamagias two-step approach to sentencing is a common sense mode of reasoning, not an inflexible rule requiring express articulation of each step, and failure to expressly record the steps does not constitute sentencing error where the instinctive synthesis approach is followed. A sentencing judge cannot reduce an otherwise appropriate term of imprisonment simply because it is likely to extend to most of the offender's remaining life expectancy.
