The sentencing range for serial burglary offences by an offender with a bad criminal history after a plea of guilty to an ex officio indictment extends at least to seven years imprisonment. A parole eligibility date set at one-sixth of the head sentence (rather than the usual one-third) may adequately reflect subjective mitigating circumstances and the totality principle where the sentence is cumulative upon an existing sentence. Whether a 'crushing' sentence provides an independent ground for setting aside a sentence remains an open question in Queensland.
