Kidnapping is not complete in fact at the moment criminal liability first attaches; the taking continues until the victim is released or ceases to withhold consent. A person who joins a kidnapping enterprise after the initial seizure but while the victim is still being taken away may be convicted of kidnapping through joint criminal enterprise. A jury's expression of a procedural preference that the law does not permit (such as requesting the absence of defendants) does not, without more, give rise to a reasonable apprehension of bias.
