A juvenile conviction for a prescribed offence under the Road Traffic Act 1974 (WA) remains a valid 'previous conviction' for the purposes of the automatic licence cancellation under s 75(2a), notwithstanding the expiry of the two-year rehabilitation period under s 189(2) of the Young Offenders Act 1994 (WA). Section 189(8)(d) preserves the operation of any cancellation or disqualification that occurs by operation of any written law, and this extends to cancellations triggered by a combination of a juvenile conviction and a subsequent adult conviction. The Spent Convictions Act 1988 (WA) route via s 189(9) and s 25 does not provide an alternative basis for excluding the juvenile conviction, because s 189(8) applies to all provisions of s 189 including s 189(9).
