Local state practices regarding the level of discounts for guilty pleas (such as the 25% discount under s 22 of the Crimes (Sentencing Procedure) Act 1999 (NSW)) do not apply to sentencing for federal offences under s 16A of the Crimes Act 1914 (Cth). Cameron v The Queen is not authority for the proposition that guilty plea discounts in federal sentencing are limited to recognition of willingness to facilitate the course of justice. On a prosecution appeal against sentence, the Director's inconsistent approach in a comparable case is a discretionary factor militating against intervention. The interaction of Part 1B of the Crimes Act 1914 (Cth) with state sentencing law remains an open question.
