A Crown prosecutor's submission that an accused lied about a collateral matter (such as alcohol consumption) in order to enhance his credibility relative to a Crown witness is permissible credibility comment, not Robinson reasoning or consciousness of guilt reasoning. A brief, isolated reference to the accused's interest in the outcome as a motive to lie is an error but will not occasion a miscarriage of justice where the trial judge gives clear directions on the burden of proof.
