The totality principle does not require a sentencing judge to adopt a mathematical formula or stated percentage of aggregate time to be served when imposing cumulative sentences. Where an offender repeatedly commits serious offences while on parole, personal deterrence justifies prominence and the totality principle does not mandate progressively shorter sentences. A serious violent offence declaration may be made to avoid inappropriate leniency provided it is supported by other relevant considerations such as the scale of offending, criminal history, and offending on parole.
