Where a trial judge's assessment of credibility is materially infected by a demonstrable error in interpreting objective documentary evidence (here, telephone records), the judgment cannot stand even where the trial judge also relied on other grounds for the credibility finding. Where the case turns on irreconcilable conflicts of testimony and the appellate court has not observed the witnesses, a new trial must be ordered rather than the appellate court resolving the matter itself.
