When sentencing for multiple offences, a sentencing judge must articulate findings as to the gravity of individual offences rather than making a blanket assessment of the offending overall, even where many offences fall within a broadly similar range. Where the victim being under the authority of the offender is an element of the offence, a sentencing judge who takes abuse of trust into account as an aggravating factor under s 21A(2)(k) must indicate awareness of the distinction between breach of trust and breach of authority and explain the basis for the finding. A sentencing judge must explain why identified factors are aggravating in the circumstances of the particular case.
