The totality principle requires a sentencing judge to take into account non-declarable pre-sentence custody served completing an earlier sentence after arrest on the current charges, but does not extend to requiring consideration of the total period spent in prison over many years due to persistent reoffending while on parole. Where a sentencing judge ameliorates the head sentence rather than setting an early parole eligibility date due to poor parole prospects, the reduction must adequately reflect both guilty pleas and non-declarable pre-sentence custody.
