Section 57(5) of the Land Use Planning and Approvals Act 1993 (Tas) confers a discretionary power on planning authorities to extend the 14-day representation period by up to a further 14 days, and this power may be exercised after the initial period has expired, including in favour of an individual applicant who has lodged a late representation. Planning authorities cannot refuse to consider an extension request on the basis that they lack power to grant it after the initial period has expired. Notices of application should inform readers of the possibility of an extension of time under s 57(5).
